Pilgrimage site now ready for Holy Week

Mt. Arayat, Philippines –Preparations are thick in this bucolic town that lies on the slopes of the fabled Mt. Arayat as an estimated 50,000 pilgrims or more are bound to flock to the so called “Banal a Bunduk, Dalan ning Krus” (Sacred Mountain, Way of the Cross) this coming Holy Week, April 10 – 16, 2017.

The fourteen stations of the cross along the slopes of Mt. Arayat in Barangay Ayala, Magalang, Pampanga where life-sized Stations of the Cross were built from its foot at the First Station until the 14th Station which is some 1.6 kilometers towards the summit.

Led by Ms. Bing Feliciano and the Soroptimist International of Magalang headed now by its president Ms. Mildred Santos who spearheaded the project since its inception in 2012, the construction of all the 14 stations were finished in time for the observance of the Holy Week this year.

However, some P1.5 million is still needed to finish the landscaping project at the foot of 35-ft statue of the Risen Christ overlooking the other stations.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Ronnie Tiotuico said his office has recorded some 50,000 pilgrims last year. As in the past years, Tiotuico said the DOT Region 3 will offer a “Attestation of Pilgrimage” for every visitor which will be offered at P50 each to help raise funds for the landscaping project as well for the upkeep of the pilgrimage site.

Tiotuico said the certificate will make a wonderful souvenir just like the ones given to pilgrims at the Holy Land in Jerusalem.

A two-day seminar on tourist reception and tour guiding will soon be offered to some 30 local student volunteers to welcome and provide guidance to pilgrims during the week – at the behest of the tourism regional office.

HOW TO GET THERE. From Manila take NLex and exit at Angeles – Magalang toll. From there take a left turn and drive all the way to Magalang in Pampanga. Upon reaching the town hall, take a right turn and drive all the way to Brgy. Ayala onto to the pilgrimage site. Travel time is about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
