Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, Palawan

The St. Paul Underground River National park was declared by Proclamation No. 853 on March 26, 1971. On July 26, 2000, it was proclaimed protected area through Presidential Proclamation No. 212.

The river flows within a deep caverns under rugged limestones and marble cliffs. Known as one of the world’s wonder, it is a river inside a cave running 8.2 kms. ; 1.5 kms of which is navigable.

Located in the west coast of Palawan, 81 kms. north of Puerto Princesa City. Two-thirds of the area is covered by lush tropical rainforest from the shoreline to the highest peak and one third is thinly vegetated karst limestone.

It was inscribed in the UNESCO List of World’s Heritage Sites.

The park is a place where tropical rainforest grows right at the river’s edge
• Coral reefs about on fringes of white sand beaches
• Colors of autumn brighten the leaves of trees growing on the cervices of limestone mountain
• An underground river winds through dark caves replete with cathedral chambers and long hallways

How to get there
Located 81 kms. from the City Proper, the place can be reached through Brgy. Cabayugan where one could take a pump boat ride to the Underground River or hike through a monkey trail. Another way is through a hired pumpboat ride from the Bahile Wharf.
