DOT - RIII JOINS KAYAK EXPLORE ZAMBALES MULTISPORTS FESTIVAL 2012

Zambales boasts of a beautiful coastline hugging 11 out of its 13 municipalities. Bounded by the West Philippine Sea and mountain ranges, rivers and a rich cultural heritage add to the list why the province stands out as a sports and ecotourism hub of Northern Luzon.

Shaping up to become the major kayaking destination in the region, Sun and Sea/Kayak Philippines, the province government of Zambales with support from the Department of Tourism – Region III will hold the Kayak Explore Zambales Multisports Festival 2012 on November 9-11.

The event brings together a 3-day eco-adventure sports of open-water swimming, kayaking, running and biking as a shout out to the universal quest of conserving our planet.

As the opening events roll off to their second day of competition, participants will witness different water and outdoor sports kickoffs. The 32k kayak marathon will be launched from the Uacon Cove in Candelaria with a turnaround at the Petron Jetty in Masinloc and back into Uacon Lake. Kayakers will go through the mouth of the river to reach the Finish line in Uacon Lake.

After an hour, an 18k kayak relay follows with a 1.5k open water swim from the shoreline to Potipot Island, 2k beach run around the scenic island, a 5k kayak dash to the boardwalk of Uacon Lake and a 10k trail bike around the lake. A team of four, with a minimum of one female member, can compete in the 18k multisports relay.

Aspiring kayakers are treated to a kayaking clinic and a 3k Novice Race around the lake perimeter. The Governor’s Night by Gov. Jun Ebdane features an array of Zambal music and dance capped by prizes and trophies awarded to top three winners of the marathons. The Department of Tourism – Region III led by Regional Director Ronaldo Tiotuico will host lunch for the participants on November 10.

The following day, a sedate eco-touring of kayaking, bird-watching and mangrove planting after a challenging 60k run bike duathlon starting from the foot of Zambales Mountain Ranges, transitioning at the Zambales Sports Complex in Iba for a 56k bike run to Uacon Lake boardwalk. Relax and enjoy a picnic on Potipot Island after seeing action during the past two days. Awarding for duathlon winners caps the festival.

Other equally interesting events include: taekwondo, swimming competition, chess and boxing.

Didi Camara, the prime mover of the event, said that this multisports festival is beginning to shape up as a major sports activity in the region and is expected to draw about 4,000 participants, the highlight of which is the 32k kayak marathon from Candelaria to Masinloc and back; the 18k Tri-Plus-One event featuring a 1.5k open water swim, 5k kayak, 10k bike and a 2k beach run; Duathon at 60k relay – 5k run / 55k bike; and Novice Race at 3k kayak Uacon Lake.

RD Tiotuico invites private and corporate groups, media and government agencies to take a look and join this sports, recreation and ecotourism – all rolled into one activity and be identified with a cause that counts and actively pursue one’s social responsibility towards sports and environment.
