TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS:

Sustainable tourism concepts and principles

Basic concepts related to tourism and how the industry can be sustainable is extensively discussed. Two vital topics emphasized in this lecture are linkages and leakages. Concepts such as ecological footprint and carrying capacity are also introduced.

Trends in tourism development

Various thematic tourism products are discussed and how they are enhanced to provide high value experiences to tourists. Trends will provide insights to the widening interests of the growing tourism market. These are insights usher in the need for innovations in tour packaging and branding.

Community-based and pro-poor tourism approaches

Poor communities usually live in areas with high tourism and ecological values. Marginalized stakeholders need to be part of the growth of local tourism in order to motivate them to care for these resources. Community-based tourism is designed to provide additional livelihood while pro-poor tourism approaches are strategies that will ensure that community-run tourism enterprises have market linkages and opportunities for financing and training.

Adventure tourism

The natural ecosystems of the country provide opportunities for a wide range of outdoor recreational activities that can be the take off point of adventure tourism products. However, some activities are more technical than others. This lecture provides insights how to match adventure options with the capabilities of the communities, as well the potential of a destination.

Climate change and tourism

Tourism is a contributor to climate change and will eventually be affected by its consequences. It is important for tourism practitioners, policy makers and stakeholders to understand how they can integrate climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in their policy agenda and operations.

Product development

A tourist attraction is not a tourism product, nor is a destination. An introduction to product development concept highlights the need to put together life enhancing and highly educational tourism packages that will have high drawing power. A discussion on tourism marketing is also part of the lecture.

Tourism planning

Communities in high tourist value areas see the potential for tourism development. Tourism however is not as simple as coming up with a brochure or web site that promotes the attractions of a destination. A holistic approach in tourism planning is essential if stakeholders want their destination to last for many generations. Ten steps in tourism planning are outlined in this lecture and discusses the tools that are used in developing a tourism master plan.
